Ik heb een vriend waarbij 12 jaar geleden MS werd vastgesteld. Hij heeft echter een relatief normaal leven. Hij heeft werk, is dol op fietsen en gek op dieren. Hij heeft echter geen vriendin en hij is overtuigd dat dat door zijn ziekte komt.

Enkele maanden geleden was hij heel erg negatief over zijn leven en zijn toekomst, hij was wat "depri". Zijn huisarts (bij wie hij op controle gaat) heeft hem toen voorgesteld om euthanasie te plegen. "Ach, het wordt toch zoveel gedaan, er zijn zoveel mensen die het al gedaan hebben en het is eigenlijk heel gewoon!" volgens deze dokter...

Advocates of legalizing euthanasia reject "slippery slope" arguments as unfounded fear-mongering and claim that its use will always be restricted to rare cases of dying people with unrelievable, unbearable suffering. But, as the Netherlands and Belgium demonstrate, that's not what results, in practice.

The logical and practical slippery slopes are unavoidable and inevitable, because those consequences are built into the act of legalization through its justification of inflicting death. Once we cross the clear line that we must not intentionally kill another person, there's no logical stopping point...

Ik denk dat we samen moeten nadenken. Hoe kan men én luisteren 1) naar de schrik van een ondraaglijk en mensonwaardig lijden én 2) naar de vrees dat de zwakkeren niet de kans hebben tot een ECHTE beslissing te komen?
