While certain Belgian politicians praise this law on euthanasia as one of the most " modern and progressive" in the world, the fact that a mere DSM label can be used as a licence to dispose of psychiatric patients by euthanasia , proves to me that something is terribly wrong in the state of Belgium.

It proves that the architecs of this infamous law were no professionals neither in the field of psychiatry nor in the domain of law making...

In November 2015 several psychiatrists, ethicists, lawyers and health professionals in Belgium gave voice to their profound concern: there is something fundamentally wrong with euthanasia in Belgium on the basis of purely psychological suffering. Two Belgian women, Sophie and Lotte Nys, just recently revealed the story of the death of Tine, their sister. On April 27 2010, Tine received euthanasia on the basis of " unbearable psychological suffering " because of "an incurable disease". Six years after the facts her family is still haunted by the experience and left behind with questions. Sophie and Lotte testified about this in a news programme of the Belgian - Flemish national television, Terzake (February 2) .

Tine Nys formulated her euthanasia request 4 months before her death. The fatal disease from which she suffered, autism, was diagnosed two months after the request. Fifteen years earlier Tine had been in psychiatric treatment for some time, and even attempted suicide. She clearly had gone through a very difficult period in her life. Yet, later on, she succeeded to build a regular life. She had a nice job, friends and family, all kinds of plans. 8 months before she died, however, she fell in a deep crisis after a relational break up and was haunted again by the wish to die: she went looking for a psychiatrist to help to end her life...

Theo Boer is hoogleraar ethiek van de zorg aan de Theologische Universiteit Kampen. Voor de Nederlandse ministeries van Volks-gezondheid en Justitie toetste hij bijna tien jaar euthanasiemeldingen in Nederland.

« Ik heb zes kinderen, waar van één zoon al 20 jaar manisch depressief is en wel in vrij hoge mate. hij zag al al de psychiatrische instellingen van het land door korte of langere opnames. deze aanleg kwam verhevigd naar boven toen hij rond zijn 21e wiet en andere drugs begon te gebruiken. al zolang zegt hij dat "leven" te zwaar is en dat hij het niet aankan. hij dreigt maw al 20 jaar met zelfmoord, maar geeft tegelijk toe dat dit een noodkreet is !! maar af en toe , eerder in manische toestand, geniet hij intens van het leven en is hij zeer optimistisch. Met de rest van het gezin zijn we dus rond hem gaan staan om hem wat omhulling te geven. met mate want nu is hij 40 en volwassen, dus "vrij" om zijn leven te leven zoals hij het wil/kan maar hij kan terugvallen op iemand. zonder opname, maar ambulant wordt hij nu gevolgd door een psychiater die hem met mate, want hij heeft niet zoveel nodig van medicatie( als hij het maar wil nemen), geneesmiddelen voorschrijft.

het is ook voor ons(rest van het gezin) al een zware weg geweest, maar hij heeft ons al zoveel geschonken : aandacht leren geven, medemenselijkheid, inlevingsvermogen dat kan groeien, leren wezenlijk liefhebben, grenzen aanvoelen en bewaken. wij (= zijn 4 broers , zij...

In november hield Jeannette van Andel (63) zich voor het laatst als scenarts bezig met euthanasie. De komende tijd wil ze zich niet meer buigen over trajecten die door andere artsen zijn ingezet. Een van haar redenen is dat mensen geen 'nee' meer lijken te accepteren. Als huisarts blijft ze wel beschikbaar voor haar eigen patiënten als die een euthanasiewens hebben.

Ik schrijf in antwoord op een krantenartikel over een jonge vrouw (24) die Laura heet. Ik ben bang dat ze misschien het recht op euthanasie krijgt alvorens al de mogelijkheden zijn uitgeput.
